Springfield Falcons News Release
The Springfield Falcons hit the ice once again at the MassMutual Center on Tuesday taking part in a double-session practice with a mixture of system drills and specialty team drills.
The Falcons announced on Tuesday that defenseman Ryan Lannon has been released from his training camp tryout agreement. Also, forward Tomas Kana was placed on Injured Reserve by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Kana arrived in Springfield Tuesday afternoon and will join his teammates on Wednesday.

--SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2010 - SPRINGFIELD FALCONS VS. PROVIDENCE BRUINS--
The Springfield Falcons will open the 2010-11 regular season on Friday night in Providence before returning home the very next night to host Providence. The Falcons and Bruins concluded the preseason against each other this past Saturday with the two teams combining for seven goals in the third period with Springfield earning the 4-3 win.
The Falcons and Bruins will help celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the American Hockey League in their home-and-home series as both teams will be wearing throwback jerseys honoring the Springfield Indians and Providence Reds. The Falcons and Bruins will see a lot of each other in their early portion of the season with three of Springfield's first four games will come against Providence.
The Falcons open the season with a new NHL affiliate, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Springfield for the fifth straight season will begin the season with a new head coach. Rob Riley joins Rob Daum (2009-10), Jeff Truitt (2008-09), Kelly Buchberger (2007-08), and Steve Stirling (2006-07) as head coaches behind the Falcons bench in the season opener since 2006.
The Falcons will enter the regular season with no returning players from the previous season due to the new affiliation.
Providence forwards Joe Colborne, Zach Hamill, Jeff LoVecchio, Jeremy Reich and Wyatt Smith, along with defenseman Steven Kampfer all joined the Bruins last week being reassigned by Boston. Smith started his pro career with Springfield back in the 1999-00 campaign, while former Falcons defenseman Cody Wild also starts the season with Providence.
--SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2010 - SPRINGFIELD FALCONS VS. CHARLOTTE CHECKERS--
The Springfield Falcons will play the Charlotte Checkers for the first time in franchise history. Charlotte enters the season with the Carolina Hurricanes as their NHL affiliate after Carolina was in Albany last year.

October 1, 2010 - The Springfield Falcons opened their preseason schedule on Friday night losing to the Worcester Sharks 2-1 at the MassMutual Center. Cory McGillis scored the Falcons' lone goal in the third period igniting a late-game rally by the Falcons, while Tom Cavanagh and Matt Vokes added assists on the marker.
The first period was a scoreless opening frame, but featured a pair of altercations. Springfield's Kyle Neuber and Worcester's Garet Hunt dropped the gloves with Neuber scoring the knockdown. Later in the opening period, Springfield's Kevin Harvey and Worcester's Matt Irwin went toe-to-toe with Harvey picking up an extra major penalty for hitting from behind and a game misconduct.
In the second period, Worcester scored a pair of goals as Steven Zalewski opened the scoring at 6:40 with a power play goal, followed by Hunt giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead at 12:49 of the middle frame.
The Falcons split their goaltending duties with Dan Taylor earning the start and stopping 25 of 27 shots in 40-minutes of action, while Riley Gill stopped both shots he faced in the third period.
Springfield was 0-4 on the power play, while Worcester was 1-5. The two teams combined for 73 minutes in penalties.

---SPRINGFIELD Vs. PROVIDENCE, OCTOBER 2 - W- 4-3--- (Preseason)
October 2, 2010 - The Springfield Falcons won a thriller in their preseason finale on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center scoring four third period goals on their way to a 4-3 win over the Providence Bruins. The Falcons used goals from Dalton Prout, Tom Cavanagh, Cory McGillis and Kevin Harvey to even their preseason record at 1-1.
After 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Falcons and Bruins had an offensive explosion in the final frame. Providence quickly built a 2-0 lead when Maxime Sauve and Jamie Arniel scored within the first 38-seconds of the third period. Springfield would answer back in a big way as Prout and Cavanagh scored less than three minutes apart early in the final frame evening the score at 2-2. Harvey gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead at 9:32 of the third period when he converted on a breakaway. McGillis scored his second goal of the preseason at 11:13 of the final period giving the Falcons some insurance at 4-2. Providence would cut their deficit to one goal late in regulation, but the Falcons held on for the win.
Springfield goaltender Daren Machesney played the full 60 minutes stopping 31 of 34 shots. There were a pair of fights in the game as Springfield's Steve Goertzen and Providence's Antoine Roussel dropped the gloves, followed by Kyle Neuber and Jeremy Reich.

PLAYER NOTES:
The Springfield Falcons announced October 3 that eight players have been assigned to Springfield by their National Hockey league affiliate, the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Falcons also announced that they have released seven players from their training camp tryout agreements.
Forwards Tomas Kubalik and Maksim Mayorov, defensemen Grant Clitsome, Nick Holden, John Moore and David Savard were assigned to the Falcons by the Blue Jackets. Forwards Tom Sestito and Ben Guite were placed on waivers for the purposes of being assigned to Springfield.
The Falcons released goaltender Riley Gill, forwards Matt Vokes, John Mori, Marcus Carroll, Cory McGillis, John Scrymgeour and defenseman Steven Kaunisto from their training camp tryout agreements.
