
Pirates Suffer Pre-Season Setback

Nashua, NH - David Meckler scored a goal and an assist to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 5-2 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League pre-season game played tonight at the Conway Arena in Nashua, NH.
Bud Holloway, Justin Azevedo, Thomas Hickey and Corey Elkins also scored for the Monarchs while Andrew Campbell collected two assists.
Luke Adam and Mark Mancari replied for the Pirates.
Manchester jumped out quickly and posted a 2-0 advantage at the end of one on goals by Meckler and Holloway. They added to the advantage with three goals in the opening half of the second period (Hickey, Azevedo and Elkins did the damage) to up the count to 5-0 after two. Adam and Mancari, on the power play, got the Pirates on the board in the third to complete the scoring.
David Leggio started and allowed five goals before being replaced midway through the second period by Alex Petizian. Petizian, a training camp invite, did not allow a goal in the final 30:25.
The Pirates open their 18th season of competition, the 34th season of AHL action at the Cumberland County Civic Center this Saturday (October 9th) when the Manchester Monarchs visit the Cumberland County Civic Center for a 7 p.m. contest. The Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, are entering their 18th season as a member of the American Hockey League while the Cumberland County Civic Center hosts AHL play for its 34th season. Calder Cup Champions in 1993-94 and finalists in 1995-96, the Pirates have been home to a total of 230 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the ninth year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2009-10.
