Lowell, Mass. – The Springfield Falcons were downed 4-3 by the Lowell Lock Monsters at Tsongas Arena on Saturday evening. Forwards Ryan Craig, Nick Tarnasky, and Evgeni Artukhin each scored for the Falcons. Springfield rookie Darren Reid collected two assists in the loss.

The Falcons scored twice in the first period to gain early control of the game. During the only man advantage of the opening frame for either team, rookie Adam Henrich set up Craig in the slot with a feed from behind the net. Craig buried the puck for his fourth goal of the season at the 7:44 mark – matching his AHL total with the Hershey Bears last season.

At 14:19 of the period, Tarnasky kept the puck on a two-on-one rush and banked a shot off the post for his third goal of his rookie campaign.

However, the Lock Monsters responded with the game's next four goals including three in the second period. Defenseman Mike Commodore scored with a shot through traffic 19 seconds into Lowell's first power play of the game to put the Monsters on the scoreboard at the 4:03 mark.

Left wing Craig MacDonald, who spent the second half of last season with the Boston Bruins, backhanded a loose puck past Falcons goaltender Jamie Storr during the Lock Monsters' next man advantage to tie the game, 2-2, with 8:40 remaining in the middle frame.

Lowell grabbed the lead in the game 58 seconds later when rookie forward Justin Taylor followed with his third goal of the season from the edge of the crease.

The clubs traded goals in the opening two minutes of the third period. Right wing Chuck Kobasew scored his fifth goal of the campaign 36 seconds into the period. Artukhin followed with a low shot that beat Monsters netminder Brent Krahn to his stick side ending a string of four straight Lowell goals and making the score 4-3.

The score ended up being the final tally as the Falcons could not come up with the game-tying goal.

The Falcons finished the game one-for-four with the man advantage. Lowell converted two of three power plays on the night.

Storr made 34 saves in the Springfield net.

Commodore (1g, 1a) and center Eric Staal (2a), the 2nd overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, collected two points apiece in the game.

With a pair of assists in the contest, Reid has recorded five helpers in the last two games for the Falcons. He was named the game's third star on Saturday night.

The Falcons will play wrap up a three-game weekend against the Hartford Wolf Pack in Connecticut on Sunday. Game time is 4:05 p.m. The Wolf Pack improved its record to 8-0 with a 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday night and remain the lone undefeated team in the American Hockey League.
