Published on February 14, 2003 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Arturs Irbe's road back to the NHL started with a bump.

Frank Banham scored twice and Jean-Marc Pelletier stopped 32 of 33 shots as the Springfield Falcons defeated Irbe's Lowell Lock Monsters, 5-1, in American Hockey League action at the Springfield (Mass.) Civic Center on Friday night.

Irbe, in his first career AHL appearance, made 27 saves on 31 attempts in defeat for Lowell. Irbe was assigned to the Lock Monsters on Thursday after being placed on waivers by the parent Carolina Hurricanes.

Pelletier, who was dealt to the Phoenix Coyotes by Carolina on Dec. 31, improved to 8-1-2 since the trade as head coach Marty McSorley saw his Falcons extend their home ice unbeaten streak to nine games.

Shane Willis, another former Hurricane, also scored for Springfield, who broke open a 1-0 game with three goals in the first 7:38 of the third period.

It was the seventh consecutive loss for the Lock Monsters, who own the AHL's worst record at 13-37-4-3.

The Falcons are the shared top development team for the Phoenix Coyotes and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
