LOOKING AHEAD:
Providence puts its 16-game home unbeaten streak to the test tonight (7:05 ET) against the defending conference champions from Bridgeport. The B's are 13-0-3-0 on home ice since Dec. 6 and 21-3-2-0 in their last 26 games overall as they pursue the franchise's third division title. The Sound Tigers have won five in a row themselves, with former Bruins Eric Manlow and Brandon Smith combining for 2+14=16 pts., and now trail Binghamton by just one point for the lead in the East Division.
Former Lowell goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier leads his Falcons into battle against the Lock Monsters in Springfield tonight (7:35 ET). The game is expected to mark the AHL debut of Arturs Irbe, who was assigned to Lowell by Carolina earlier this week. The Falcons are 6-0-2-0 at home in 2003 and 3-0-1-0 this season against the Lock Monsters after losing all six meetings a year ago. Lowell, which has lost six in a row, has dropped 15 of 18 one-goal games this season (3-12-0-3).
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton pays a visit to Albany on Saturday afternoon (2:00 ET) riding a four-game unbeaten streak overall but with just one win in its last seven on the road. The Penguins posted a 6-3 win over the River Rats on Jan. 4 behind four-point efforts by Tomas Surovy and Tom Kostopoulos. Greg Crozier, a member of the Penguins' 2001 Calder Cup finalist team, has 24 points in 30 games since joining Albany in late November; Pens forward Matt Murley, a Capital District native and an alumnus of nearby RPI, has moved into a tie for eighth in scoring among AHL rookies.
The Corel Centre in Kanata, Ont., hosts its first AHL game on Saturday as Binghamton battles St. John's (4:05 ET, 5:35 NT). The Senators won the teams' first meeting on New Year's Eve, 3-2, thanks to a pair of goals by Jason Spezza, who was recalled by Ottawa on Thursday. The Maple Leafs are 6-1-1-0 in their last eight games entering the weekend, but still sit in 11th place, outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
