February 10, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â The Springfield Falcons, American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, today announced that the club has acquired goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier on loan from the Utah Grizzlies in exchange for goaltender Jamie Storr.
In making the announcement, Falcons president and general manager Bruce Landon stated, "We are very excited about having last season's team MVP return to Springfield. The Lightning made a strong effort in the off season to acquire him in a trade with Phoenix, but it did not work out. I am very pleased that the Lightning have supported this move to bring Jean-Marc back to Springfield. Jamie Storr is a quality person and goaltender and we wish him nothing but success in Utah."
In two previous seasons (2002-03 and 2003-04) with the Falcons, Pelletier registered a goals against average of 2.57 and save percentage of .924. His record with the club is 22-31-9. The Atlanta, Georgia native set a franchise record (min. 25 games) with a .922 save percentage during the 2003-04 campaign. At the conclusion of the campaign, Pelletier received the Ross Lowe Memorial Award along with fellow netminder David LeNeveu as team co-Most Valuable Players. During the 2003 Calder Cup Playoffs, Pelletier posted a 3-3 record, 2.61 goals against average, and .924 save percentage and backstopped the Falcons to an opening-round series win over the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The Falcons originally acquired Pelletier on Dec. 31, 2002 following a trade between the Phoenix Coyotes, who was Springfield's NHL affiliate at the time, and the Carolina Hurricanes. The Coyotes dealt then Falcons goaltender Patrick DesRochers to the Hurricanes in exchange for Pelletier and a conditional draft selection in the swap.
Pelletier, 26, posted a 6-12-1 record, 3.75 goals against average, and .891 save percentage in 23 games with Utah this season. In 286 professional games played in the NHL, AHL, and the now defunct International Hockey League, the seven-year veteran owns a record of 127-113-25. The 6-3, 210-pound netminder was named MVP of the 1999 AHL All-Star Game in Philadelphia while a member of the hometown Phantoms. Pelletier was the Philadelphia Flyers' first selection (2nd round, 30th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
In 30 games with Springfield this season, Storr registered an 8-20-2 record, 3.22 goals against average, and .905 save percentage. The former Los Angeles Kings netminder stopped 34 of 35 shots in a 4-1 Falcons' win over the Worcester IceCats on Dec. 26. The Falcons signed Storr to an AHL contract on Sept. 29, 2004.
Pelletier will join the Falcons in time for the club's game versus the Worcester IceCats on Friday evening at the Springfield Civic Center.
