Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, CALIF. - The Fresno Falcons announced today that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Rob Klinkhammer for the 2008-09 season.
The 22-year-old comes to Fresno after playing last season with the Norfolk Admirals in the American Hockey League. Klinkhammer appeared in 66 games for Norfolk last season, scoring 12 goals and adding 12 assists for 24 points. He also participated in the 2007 Traverse City Prospects Camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Klinkhammer, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound winger, played four years of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with Lethbridge, Seattle, Portland, and Brandon, tallying 57 goals and adding 67 assists in 230 career games. During the 2006-07 season, he ranked 17th in the league scoring race with 73 points, and he led Portland in both goals (23) and points (42) despite playing in just 37 games.
"Rob is a big power forward who had a lot of success at the AHL level as a first year player last season" Falcons head coach and general manager Matt Thomas said. "He is another player that will make things difficult for opposing players when they visit Selland Arena. We look for him to be a player that contributes offensively, defensively and physically. He has really come into his own the last two years and we look for him to continue to develop as a pro."
Opening Night 2008 at Selland Arena is set for Friday, October 24, when the Falcons host their arch-rivals, the Bakersfield Condors, at 7:35 p.m. Season Ticket packages start at just $432, and are now available by calling the Falcons at (559) 485-7825.
Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 23 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 828 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Eighteen of the 23 teams have played at least five years in their current city.
The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
