Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
CLINTON, IA - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (13-11) earned their second extra inning win of the season this evening, beating the Clinton LumberKings (14-7) 2-1 in 10 innings. 1B Devin Davis drove in both Hot Rods runs, while RHP Drew Strotman set a new career high with nine strikeouts.
Bowling Green got started offensively with two outs in the second inning. LF Moises Gomez singled, and then scored when Davis doubled to the wall in left field, and it was 1-0 Hot Rods. For Davis, it was his fourth double of the season and his third in the last two games.
Strotman was dealing early, as he cruised through four innings and was nearly untouchable, surrendering just one walk through the first 12 batters. However, the LumberKings collected back-to-back hits in the fifth, tying the game at one.
The game stayed tied into extras, but each team had their chances in the ninth. With two outs, Gomez was stranded at second for the Hot Rods. Then, in the bottom of the inning, after 1B Ryan Costello worked a walk, C Ryan Scott came up two batters later and stroked a double to left field that looked like it was going to win the game for Clinton. However, the Hot Rods had the perfect relay- Gomez to SS Taylor Walls to C Ronaldo Hernandez, to cut down Costello at the plate and send the game to the 10th.
In the extra frame, the Hot Rods runner on second was Gomez. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Davis sac fly to right, giving the guests a 2-1 lead.
Clinton got their runner to third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning, but RHP Tyler Zombro was able to get a strikeout, pop out and ground out to end the game and give Bowling Green the win.
Zombro (2-0) earned the win, throwing one and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Strotman, who ended up receiving a no-decision, threw six innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking two, and set a new career high with nine strikeouts.
The Hot Rods and LumberKings will meet again tomorrow morning at 11am at Ashford University Field. RHP Tobias Myers (1-2, 4.76) will get the start for Bowling Green, while Clinton will counter with RHP Tommy Romero (2-1, 1.29).
