Two Grand Slams Sink Loons
May 1, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - It was ominous from the outset for the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night. Jake Adams and Jonathan Arauz each hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning for the Quad Cities River Bandits as part of a nine-run inning to lead the visitors to a 15-2 victory.
It was the most runs scored in a game between both teams this season with the previous high of 16 coming on April 8 against the Lansing Lugnuts.
Adams jumped on Loons (7-15) starter Max Gamboa who lasted 0.1 inning allowing seven runs (six earned) on three hits with two walks. Andre Scrubb surrendered the second home run of the inning to Arauz.
The River Bandits (11-12) added two more runs in the second and Corey Julks launched a three-run home run in the fourth inning to push the lead to 14-0.
Nick Yarnall woke the Great Lakes offense up in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run home run out to right field. It was Yarnall's fifth home run of the season, which moves him into a tie with Will Benson (Lake County) and Pat McInerney (Wisconsin) for the Midwest League lead in that category. The 23-year-old has remained a constant force in the lineup hitting .329/.390/.571 and going 23-for-70 at the plate so far in 2018.
On a night when positives may have been difficult to find, Romer Cuadrado produced a multi-hit game going 2-for-4; Aneurys Zabala turned in two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen; and catcher-turned-pitcher for the night Garrett Hope did not allow a baserunner over the final 1.2 innings.
The homestand rolls on with game two of six in a row at home on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond. Tyler Ivey (0-2, 4.58 ERA) will get the start Quad Cities while Wills Montgomerie (0-0, 0.50) will make his second start of the season after his first three appearances came in relief. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
