Extra Inning Thriller Results in Jackals 5-4 Loss
After splitting a doubleheader against the Rockland Boulders on July 10 in Rockland, New York, the New Jersey Jackals took on the Boulders in an 11:05 a.m. game July 11 at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Jackals lost to the Boulders by the score of 5-4 after 11 innings of play.
Starting pitcher for the Jackals Tyler Levine pitched six innings, gave up two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two batters. Vin Mazzaro took the loss.
Rockland starting pitcher David Palladino pitched six innings, allowing up one hit, no runs, walked three and struck out five batters. Frank Moscatiello earned the win for the Boulders.
In the top of the first inning, JC Rodriguez started the Boulders off with a leadoff single. Conor Bierfeldt popped out for the first out of the inning. Conrad Gregor struck out swinging and Rodriguez tried to steal second base but was caught in a rundown to produce the third out of the inning.
For the Jackals, Andy Mocahbee struck out swinging for out number one. Jordan Hinshaw bunted his way on base down the third base line. David Harris popped out to right field for out number two. Danny Canela earned a walk and with two outs and runners on first and second, Seth Spivey popped out to left field to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Bierfeldt led off with a walk. Gregor earned himself a single allowing Bierfeldt to get to third base. Marcus Nidiffer hits into a double play, but that allowed Bierfeldt to score from third, giving the Boulders a 1-0 lead.
Jumping to the sixth inning and two outs, Gregor hit a two-out single. He then stole second base during Nidiffer's at bat. Nidiffer hit a two-out RBI single allowing Gregor to score from second base. Boulders then led, 2-0.
Nate Gerken came into the game relieving Levine for the Jackals in the top of the seventh inning. Krause grounded out to Triunfel at shortstop for the first out. McDonald hit a hard ground ball to second base, but was bobbled by Cabrera. As the ball went past him, there was no one backing up Cabrera and McDonald took an extra base. Jason Agresti hit a double into the left centerfield gap allowing McDonald to score from second. Boulders then went up 3-0. After Aaron Wilson grounded out to Triunfel, Rodriguez came up to bat. A wild pitch allowed Agresti to take third base, but Rodriguez popped out to Harris in center field for the final out of the inning.
The Boulders make a pitching change as Andy Lalonde stepped onto the mound. After a Canela strikeout in the bottom of the seventh inning, Spivey hit a single producing the second hit of the game for the Jackals.
In the top of the eighth inning, Justin Martinez replaced Gerken on the mound. Martinez was able to hold the Boulders off, getting two quick outs, walking Nidiffer and striking out Mogues. Matt Kostalos came in relief for Boulders' pitcher Lalonde.
Torres led off in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single up the middle. Cabrera popped out to first in foul territory and Mocahbee walked. With one out and runners on first and second, Hinshaw stepped up to the plate. Henshaw then grounded into a double play.
In the top of ninth inning, Krause flew out to right field and McDonald got a single up the middle. A pass ball during Agresti's at bat allowed McDonald to take second base. Agresti ended up earning a walk. The Jackals get out of the inning with Wilson hitting into a 4-6-3 double play. Kyle Hanson came in relief for Kostalos for the Boulders.
Jackals begin a rally with Harris leading off with a walk and Canela hitting a single to right field. Spivey hit into a fielder's choice play as Canela was thrown out at second. Jackals now have runners on the corners and one out. Meadows struck out on a foul tip caught by the catcher. Triunfel hit a two-out RBI single, scoring Harris from third and moving Spivey from first to third. Boulders were up 3-1. Triunfel stole second during Torres' at bat and now runners are in scoring position for the Jackals. Torres hit to first base, but the ball was bobbled and both Spivey and Triunfel scored. Jackals tied the game 3-3. Cabrera stepped into the box with Torres at second base, representing the winning run. Cabrera struck out swinging and that would take the game into extra innings.
Evan DeLuca came into the game to pitch for the Jackals. Rodriguez led off for the Boulders in the top of the tenth inning with a single. After a Bierfeldt fly out to center field, Gregor hit a single advancing Rodriguez to second base. With that, Brooks Carey made another pitching change, bringing in Vin Mazzaro. A wild pitch allowed Rodriguez and Gregor to move up 90 ft. into scoring position. Nidiffer advanced on a fielder's choice.
In the eleventh inning, the international tiebreaker rule came into effect. This is when the last out of the last half inning starts at second base. Mogues started at second base and Krause came up to bat, but he flew out to second base. Jackals decided to intentionally walk McDonald. After Agresti struck out swinging, Wilson came up to bat with two outs. Wilson hits a two-out triple down the right field line scoring both Mogues and McDonald. Boulders retook the lead 5-3. Rodriguez grounded out to first base ending the inning for the Boulders.
Harris started at second base in the bottom of the eleventh inning and Canela came back up to bat. He grounded out to first base but that allowed Harris to move over to third base. Spivey hit a one-out RBI single scoring Harris from third. Jackals are now down 5-4. Meadows follows Spivey and hit a single. Torres came up with two outs and runners on the corners. He was in this position just two innings ago when he hit in the tying runs. He grounded out to the shortstop for the final out of the game.
The Jackals will take on the Sussex County Miners in a three-game series July 12-14 with the game on July 14 being at Yogi Berra Stadium. First game will be July 12 in Sussex County with a 7:05 p.m first pitch.
