Round Rock Express News Release
Round Rock Express outfielder Anthony Acevedo, second baseman Chris Burke, pitcher D.J. Houlton and shortstop Tommy Whiteman have been named 2003 Texas League All Stars. The game will played June 16 at Wichita's Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Express tied Midland for the second most players selected in the West Division, behind only division leading San Antonio.
This will be Acevedo's second career All Star Game, after being selected to the Appalachian League's game in 2000 as a member of the Martinsville Astros. In his first year at Double-A, Acevedo is on track for career highs in batting average and doubles. Through Sunday, Acevedo was hitting .328, tenth in the League, and led the team with 20 extra base hits.
This will be Burke's first All Star Game as a professional. He ranks fourth in the League in hitting with a .338 average, 74 points higher than his 2002 average, and was second in the TL with five triples. He's also had the League's second longest hitting streak (15) and reached base a TL high 37 consecutive games.
Houlton will be making his second career All Star appearance after competing in the 2001 Appalachian League game for Martinsville. Houlton has emerged as the team's ace and pitched the Texas League's first complete game shutout on May 29 against Midland.
Whiteman, selected as a utility infielder, was selected to his second All Star game. He was selected for the 2001 South Atlantic League game when he was playing for the Lexington Legends. Whiteman leads the team in home runs (8) and RBIs (37) and has emerged as one the best power hitting middle infielders in the TL.
The East Division's team will be announced Tuesday.
