Mathews and Eric Ludwick in exchange for first baseman Mark McGwire on July 31, 1997. Stein was then traded by the A's with pitchers Brad Rigby and Jeff D'Amico to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kevin Appier on July 31, 1999. Stein was 0-4, 7.91 (46.2 IP - 41 ER) with one save in 27 appearances (two starts) with the Royals in 2002. He also appeared in six games (three starts) for Double-A Wichita, going 0-1, 3.48 (10.1 IP - 4 ER).
