PCL Names Players of the Week

Published on June 2, 2003 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Tacoma Rainiers right-hander Rafael Soriano has claimed the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week Award for games beginning on May 26 and continuing through June 1st by winning both his starts and striking out 18 batters. Las Vegas 51s outfielder Chad Hermansen is the circuit's Batter of the Week for the same period, thanks to a .480 batting average and a weekend home run binge.

Soriano, a native of San Jose, Dominican Republic, started the week on May 26 by beating the Tucson Sidewinders, allowing two runs on four hits through seven innings while walking one and striking out ten. Five days later, on May 31, the Seattle Mariners prospect beat the Sacramento River Cats , holding one of the hottest teams in the PCL to one run on two hits through eight innings while walking one and striking out eight to earn his fourth victory of the season. The two outings also helped Soriano lower his earned run average on the year to 2.82, eighth best in the Pacific Coast League.

Hermansen joined the 51s on May 19, and almost immediately started paying dividends, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in on May 27, and hitting his first home run of the season in a 5-2 win over Salt Lake two days later. On the weekend, however, the Las Vegas resident hit the jackpot, cracking two home runs and driving in three on May 30, then returning a day later to go 5-for-5 with a homer, four RBI, and a stolen base in a 10-0 win at Portland. In three days, the Los Angeles Dodger farmhand clubbed four home runs and had eight RBI. For the week, Hermansen posted a .480 batting average, a 1.040 slugging percentage, two doubles, and six runs scored.
