Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Lowell, MA- The Vermont Expos were finally able to win three straight games, but they'll have to wait to get back to the .500 mark after splitting a doubleheader with the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday night in New York-Penn League action at LeLecheur Park.

The game one 4-3, nine-inning victory gave Vermont its first three-game winning streak since August of 2002, but the 1-0 shutout loss in the nightcap denied the Expos (12-14) for the fourth time this season of reaching the .500 mark.

The Expos couldn't get a hit over the first five innings in game one of the doubleheader, but the Spinners weren't able to get a base hit over the final six innings of the opener as Vermont rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth and one run in the ninth for the 4-3 victory.

While Vermont had just one base runner (leadoff hit batter in fourth) over the first five innings, Lowell scored an unearned run in the first inning and Salvador Paniagua hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Spinners their 3-0 lead.

But after the home run, Expos starter Jon Felfoldi settled down to strikeout the final two batters of the second. Then after allowing a leadoff infield single in the third, Felfoldi struckout the side in the inning and retired the final nine batters he faced allowing Vermont to get back into the game.

After no hits over the first five innings, Vermont pounded out six hits in the sixth inning to tie the game. Jose Contreras singled and Maurice Cobb doubled to open the inning. After a strikeout, the Expos got three straight RBI singles from Ofilio Castro, Marvin Lowrance and Edgardo Baez to tie the game 3-3.

The game stayed 3-3 until the ninth when Contreras singled with two outs, Cobb was hit by the 10th pitch in his at bat and Duron Legrande singled to center to score Contreras with the eventual winning run.

Eddie Diaz (1-1) picked up the win in relief of Felfoldi, while Gus Hlebovy pitched the bottom of the ninth for his sixth save. Diaz tossed three perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts as he and Felfoldi combined to retire 18 straight Lowell batters after the leadoff single in the third inning. Hlebovy stretched that streak to 20 as he retired the first two batters of the ninth before giving up a four-pitch walk, then struckout John Otness to end the game.

Game two saw a pitchers duel betwenn Vermont starter Chris Goodman and Lowell starter Anibal Snachez. Goodman (1-2) tossed six innings for the Expos, but took the loss after allowing the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff triple and a one-out sacrifice fly.

Sanchez allowed just two hits over five innings with two walks and nine strikeouts in a no-decision, while Scott Shoemaker (2-0) pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory. After giving up a leadoff bunt single in the seventh, Shoemaker struckout the final three Vermont batters to end the game and give the Spinners a split of the twinbill.

The two teams will play game four of the five-game series at Lowell on Thursday night. After the series finale on Friday, Vermont returns home on Saturday night to begin a six-game homestand against the Batavia Muckdogs at Centennial Field.
