Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Spinners announced today that they are teaming up once again with "Kids Gear for Baseball," asking fans to donate their used baseball and softball equipment to area youth organizations on Friday, July 16th at LeLacheur Park in exchange for chances to win Red Sox tickets and other valuable prizes.

Fans attending the Friday evening game will be asked to drop off their bats, balls and gloves with "Kids Gear" volunteers situated at Gates A & C.

"Kids Gear for Baseball" is a grassroots, non-profit community-based organization that distributes used equipment to needy children in the greater Boston area. Each fan donating equipment will have the opportunity to win autographed memorabilia and other valuable prizes.

"The community is very important to the Lowell Spinners," said Spinners General Manager Tim Bawmann. "We do as much as we can to give back to the surrounding areas and are very proud to support "Kids Gear for Baseball". We encourage our fans to bring any used baseball equipment they can donate to the Friday, July 16 game."

Recipients of equipment include youth organizations such as Girls Inc. of Lynn, Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Worcester and Lawrence, Cross Roads for Kids, Sandra's Lodge and Pacific Rim Charter School in Hyde Park.

"Thanks to the support of the Lowell Spinners, 'Kids Gear' donated equipment to more than 11 youth organizations last year reaching out to nearly 1,000 kids," said Lauren Ritchie. "Heading into our second season, we look forward to providing even more kids with the equipment they need to play ball in 2004."

"Kids Gear for Baseball" was founded in 2002 by cousins Lauren Ritchie of Lynnfield, MA, and Christopher Ritchie of Lexington, MA. The program is run by student volunteers who collect used baseball and softball equipment from leagues, teams and individuals. The donated equipment is then sorted, inventoried and distributed to youth organizations in need.
