Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Expos scored seven runs on three hits, five walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the first inning to jump out a 7-0 lead and went on to an 8-5 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats to snap a six-game losing streak in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Centennial Field.
After retiring Jose Contreras on a groundout to start the bottom of the first inning, Tri-City starter Douglas Arguello (1-4) any of the next nine batters that he faced. Francisco Plasencia started the rally with a single, then Arguello walked two to load the bases before Luis Apodaca grounded a two-run double down the rightfield line for a 2-0 lead.
Arguello then hit Mike Daniel to reload the bases and walked John Poppert to force home the third run. Lorvin Louisa followed with a two-run double down the leftfield line for a 5-0 Vermont lead. Back-to-back walks to Andy Lane and Contreras forced home another run and marked the end of the night for Arguello.
Cory Lapinski came on in relief and got Plasencia to hit into an RBI forceout for the seventh run and retired Leonard Davis on a popout to finally end the bottom of the first. The Expos took an 8-0 lead in the fourth on a Louisa leadoff double and one-out RBI single from Plasencia.
The beneficiary of the Expos offense was starter John Lannan (2-3), who allowed just three hits and three walks over the first six innings before being touched for five runs (three earned) in the seventh. Wladimir Sutil and Eric King had RBI singles in the seventh off Lannan, while Neil Patrick Sellers added an RBI double.
Jamie Lehman relieved Lannan with two runners in scoring position and two outs in the seventh. He looked to get out of the inning on a grounder to first, but Carlos Torres' toss to Lehman at first was wild and allowed two unearned runs to score and cut the Vermont lead to 8-5.
But Lehman retired the final batter of the seventh, tossed a perfect eighth and allowed just a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season as the Expos snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory.
Plasencia was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI for Vermont (19-37), while Louisa was 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and two RBI. Sellers, who entered the night with a league-leading .375 average was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI for Tri-City (28-27).
The Expos homestand continues on Thursday night with the first of four games for Vermont against the Stedler-Division leading Oneonta Tigers at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 p.m.
