Explorers Trounce St. Paul

Sioux City.....A nine-run fifth inning for the Explorers broke open a one-run game as Sioux City trounced St. Paul 13-3 Wednesday at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Explorers had a 4-3 lead going into the fifth inning, but sent 14 batters to the plate to score nine runs to put the game away. Of the 14 batters, Sioux City had six hits plus the Saints walked five batters in the inning.

Sioux City had taken a 3-0 lead in the first on a RBI double by Anthony Webster and a two-run RBI by Justin Nelson. However, St. Paul came back to tie the game with a three-run third inning. The Explorers took the lead for good in the fourth when Alex Llanos led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice RBI bunt by Nick McCoola.

St. Paul had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning as they had the bases loaded with one out, but failed to score.

Nick McCoola had a single in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games while lead off hitter Dustin Jones reached base safely in all six at bats with three singles, two walks and he was hit by a pitch.

Ty Marotz started for the Explorers and picked up his second victory of the season while St. Paul starter Mitch Wylie suffered the loss.

With the victory, the Explorers are now tied for second place with St. Paul in the American Association North, both five games behind first place Wichita.

After a day off Thursday, the Explorers will travel to Sioux Falls to start a three-game series on Friday. The X's return home Monday to begin a four-game series with Wichita.
