Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Wichita, KS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (15-18) scored four runs on RBI walks in a 7-5 victory over the Wichita Wingnuts (21-11) on Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The win completed the Canaries six-game road trip with a 4-2 record.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Will Savage kept the Canaries hitless through the first 4.1 innings, but Trevor Lawhorn delivered the Canaries first hit in a big way, homering to left field. Lawhorn's third home run of the season gave the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Patrick Reilly followed with a double and scored on a single by Jared Lemieux. At the midpoint of the game, the Canaries led by a pair, 2-0.
Wichita tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Thompson started the inning with a single. Zach Goldberg followed with a groundball to Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly that was errantly thrown into left field. With two on, Brenan Herrera laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Nick Blasi delivered a two-run single to tie the game, 2-2.
The Birds went back in front in the sixth inning. Tim Hutting started the inning with a double. Cory Harris followed with a bunt single that advanced Hutting to third and extend his consecutive games on-base streak to 26 games. With runners on the corners, Reggie Taylor hit a ground ball to the first baseman. Taylor reached on a fielder's choice as the defense caught Hutting hung-up between third base and home plate. With two on and one out, Trevor Lawhorn singled to load the bases. Reilly followed with an RBI walk for a 3-2 lead.
Wichita again tied the game in the seventh inning. Herrera reached on an infield single, and advanced to second base when the Canaries misplayed a bunt off the bat of Nick Blasi. With two on, Josh Horn singled to score Herrera and once again tie the game, 3-3.
The Canaries walked their way to a big lead in the eighth inning. Reggie Taylor opened the inning with a single. Wichita relievers Tyler Rhoden and Justin Young combined to walk the next five consecutive batters, plating three Canaries runs for a 6-3 lead. One final Birds run scored when Joe Anthonsen grounded into a double play, and the Canaries led 7-3 after seven and a half innings.
Wichita made a run in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Thompson singled, Herrera reached on catcher's interference, and Blasi walked to load the bases against Patrick Lawler. Kris Regas came into the game and while Wichita was able to score Thompson and Herrera on an infield single and a sacrifice fly, 7-5 was as close as the Wingnuts would get. Regas sat down the final five batters he faced to seal the victory.
Patrick Lawler (2-0) picked up his second win of the road trip despite giving up three runs, two earned on two hits in 1.1 innings. Tyler Rhoden (2-2) did not get an out in suffering his second loss against the Canaries. Regas closed out the game for his 12th save of the season.
The Canaries return home for a three-game series with the Sioux City Explorers beginning on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game will feature Post-Game Fireworks presented by Sanford Health and a Canaries Water Bottle Giveaway presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
