Sioux City Explorers News Release
Winnipeg, Canada-----The Explorers rally in the ninth inning fell short as Winnipeg defeated Sioux City 3-2 here Monday at Shaw Park.
Ray Serrano had a one-out double in the ninth inning, but Winnipeg relief pitcher Dexter Carter struck out Ryan Priddy and Wally Backman, Jr. to finish the game and snapped the Goldeyes three-game losing streak.
Winnipeg with single runs in the first, second and fourth inning took a 3-0 lead as the Explorers were held hitless through the first four and a third innings by winning pitcher Matt Rusch. Serrano's one-out single in the fifth inning not only broke up the no-hit attempt by Rauch, but a perfect game also. Rauch had retired the first 13 batter he faced.
The Explorers were finally able to score in the sixth inning when Youske Inoguchi had a two-out double, followed by a RBI double by Peter Barrows. It was Barrows first hit as he joined the Explorers in his first game Monday from Bridgeport (CN) in the Atlantic League. The second Explorer run came in the eighth when Mike Bisenius led off the inning with a single and after moving to second base on a wild pitch, scored on a single by Brandon Newton. However, it wasn't enough as the Explorers lost 3-2 in the first game of a three-game series to Winnipeg.
The two teams will meet again Tuesday at Shaw Park. Game time will be 7:05.
