July 7, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA– The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, made a ninth-inning rally, but fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Evansville Otters Wednesday night at Falconi Field.

Evansville (29-17) entered the game having lost its last three games and trailing Washington (30-15) by 2 1/5 games in the Frontier League East Division. However, they struck for four runs in the top of the third, and starting pitcher Jeremy Lewis (4-2) earned his second victory in three starts against the Wild Things by allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings.

Washington managed one run in the third, one in the seventh, and had the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Otter closer Amad Stephens notched his league-leading 12th save by getting Jon Cahill to fly out to left.

Washington starter Grant Dorn gave up four runs in five innings, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season. Offensively, the Wild Things out hit the Otters 12-8 and was paced by Jack Headley's 4-for-5 performance.

The victory closed the gap between the two front-running teams to 1.5 games. Washington has now lost two straight after winning six in a row.

Before the game, Washington manager John Massarelli made his three manager picks for next week's Frontier League All-Star Game. One of the three was Washington pitcher Matt Powell.

The Wild Things will try to even the series Thursday night. Probable starters for Thursdays game are Washington's Matt Powell (5-0, 3.92 ERA) and Evansville's Grant Williams (6-0, 1.99 ERA). The game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start, and tickets are still available. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-866-456-WILD or online at www.washingtonwildthings.com.
