Evansville downs Wild Things

June 1, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release

For the fifth time this season, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, failed to win consecutive games. The Evansville Otters used a three-run fifth inning to pull out a 5-3 victory.

The win ends Evansville three-game losing streak and improves their record to 5-5. The Wild Things fall to 5-6 on the season.

Washington scored two in the first inning to take an early advantage. Jack Headley led off with a single and Kevin Nulton followed with a single. One batter later, Jay Coakley drove in Headley with a single and Randy McGarvey followed with an RBI single of his own.

Washington's starter, Jory Coughenour, worked through the first two innings without allowing a run. But his throwing error in the top of the third allowed Evansville's Denver Stuckey to reach base, and that led the way to a two-run single by Terrence McClain.

McClain added another RBI in the fifth, and Sean Flynn drove in two runs with a triple, pushing the Otter's lead to 5-2. Washington added one in the sixth, but it would not be enough.

Coughenour pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned), while striking out six. Jeremy Lewis earned the victory for Evansville. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, and gave up seven hits and three runs. Amad Stephenson picked up his third save of the season.

McClain led the Otters at the plate with two hits and two RBI. Flynn had two singles and a triple. Washington's Randy McGarvey had two singles and two RBI. Jon Cahill pushed his hitting streak to eight games with three singles.

The series finale against Evansville is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:05. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at www.washingtonwildthings.com, or by calling 1-866-456-WILD.
