Esks special team ace Jed Roberts retires
February 28, 2003 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Edmonton Elks News Release
Edmonton, AB â After 13 seasons during which he defined the words perseverance and dedication, Edmonton Eskimos defensive tackle Jed Roberts announced his retirement today.
Roberts leaves as the Eskimos all-time leader in special teams tackles (163) and an all-time leader in community service. The son of former Ottawa Roughrider Jay Roberts (1964-'70), Jed has been a mainstay in the Eskimos popular Stay In School program and has traveled extensively throughout Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories to speak with children of all ages.
"Jed has overcome a lot of adversity to become a pro athlete," said Eskimo Head Coach Tom Higgins. "As good a player as he was, Jed is an even better person."
At the age of four, Jed was diagnosed with a nerve condition in both ears and wasn't expected to talk. That determination carried through to his playing career where he has twice overcome serious injuries. In 1998, Jed suffered a torn Achilles that ended his season. He returned mid-way through 1999. Last year, Jed's season was cut short when he suffered a broken ankle Week #2 vs. Ottawa.
"It's been a tremendous honour to play for the Eskimos," said Roberts, on announcing his retirement. "My teammates and this city have given me memories I will treasure forever. Once an Eskimo, always an Eskimo."
