Esks Hosts Riders in Regular Season Finale

Edmonton Elks News Release

It's all come down to the final regular season game of the season for Edmonton to determine who and where they'll play in the post-season. The Esks (10-7) let a chance to nail down first slip away with last Saturday's loss to the Lions in Vancouver and are now in a three way traffic jam for top spot in the West.

However, a first place finish is still within reach IF the Eskimos beat Saskatchewan Friday and BC loses to Montreal on Saturday. If that scenario unfolds, the Eskimos will win the CFL West for the first time since 2003. As long as Edmonton wins Friday, they clinch at least second place and a home playoff game for the first time since 2004. The Esks can fall to third with a loss and a Calgary win over the Bombers on Saturday at McMahon Stadium.

The Riders (5-12) are playing out a dismal 2011 campaign that has seen the firing of Head Coach Greg Marshall and Offensive Coordinator Doug Berry and the return to the sidelines of Ken Miller, who announced his retirement earlier this week. Perhaps the only things motivating Saskatchewan will be auditioning for next year and sending Miller off into the sunset with a victory.

The Esks are 8-2 in their last ten games at Commonwealth against the 'Riders and have won the last three meetings. Edmonton's defence needs a bounce back performance after surrendering some big plays to the Lions last week, especially in the early going. The 1000-yard watch continues for RB Jerome Messam who is just 19 yards shy of the mark. Messam, Edmonton's nominee for Outstanding Canadian, would be the first Canadian since Sean Millington in 2000 to rush for 1000+ yards in a single season.
