Eskimos vs. BC Lions - Friday Night Football

July 24, 2002 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Edmonton Elks News Release

EDMONTON – For some fast and furious Friday night football, the Edmonton Eskimos take on the BC Lions July 26, with a 7:00 pm kickoff at Commonwealth Stadium. The game will be broadcast on TSN (Blackout locally), 630 CHED – Edmonton and CKNW – Vancouver.

Gates open one hour before kickoff – fans are encouraged to come early to explore the new Edmonton Eskimos Team Store in the West concourse, where construction is now complete. Also, the first 5000 fans attending the game will receive a Garnier Fructus sample.

It is DeWalt night at Commonwealth Stadium. Pre game activities include the "DeWalt Spike the Ball Challenge," which provides lucky fans the opportunity to try out a DeWalt power tool and win some great prizes. Half-Time entertainment just got stronger – North America's Strongest Man, Hugo Girard, will perform at Half-Time demonstrating his powerful skills, presented by DeWalt. Some spectators will also have the chance to take home their own DeWalt prize; the Eskimos Fun Team will be tossing discount coupons on DeWalt tools into the crowd.

Fans should be aware that security measures are being taken upon entrance to Commonwealth Stadium, to ensure their safety during the game. Every bag that spectators want to bring into the stadium will be checked. At each gate, there will be two lines, one for people carrying bags and another for those who do not. Security will be checking for glass containers, any item that could be used as a weapon and contraband.

Game Overview: The Lions are coming off their first win of the season, a 51-21 pounding of Hamilton last Thursday at BC Place. The Eskimos meantime went down to their first loss of '02 to the ‘Riders 45-11 at Taylor Field last Friday. It was Edmonton's largest margin of defeat since July 29th 1999 when they lost 54-8 to Hamilton. It's the second of two meetings this season between the Lions and Eskimos. They meet again September 13th at BC Place Stadium.

Keys to the Game:

Gut Check Time: How will the Esks respond to what happened last week, and perhaps more importantly, how will the team deal with injuries to Jason Maas and Ronald Williams?

TDs for TV: Ricky Ray, with his first start as quarterback, will have to find a way to get the ball to Terry Vaughn, who registered just one catch last week and just three receptions Week #3 vs. Toronto.

Stop the Run: Edmonton gave up nearly 300 yards rushing against Saskatchewan. Ageless Damon Allen can put a defence on its heels with his running and Sean Millington is fresh off a four TD performance last week.

That's Special: After giving up three blocked punts in two straight games (two returned for TDs), the Eskimos were able to protect Sean Fleming last week. However, Paul McCallum turned a faked punt into a long gain and the ‘Riders had had good field position off returns.

The Edmonton Eskimo Football Club started its 53rd season on June 28, 2002. The Eskimos next home game is on Wednesday, August 7 versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Tickets are available now in person at the Edmonton Eskimo Team Store, 9023 111 Avenue or by phone at (780) 448-ESKS, 1-800-667-3757 or by Ticketmaster at (780) 451-8000 or (780) 447-6800. The Edmonton Eskimo Football club will also host the 2002 Grey Cup on November 24, 2002. For more information on the Edmonton Eskimos, please visit our web site at www.esks.com.
