Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â Thursday, July 25, 2002 â The Ottawa Renegades, who have played their first four regular season games against West division rivals, finally meets an opponent closer to home.
Thursday's contest at Frank Clair Stadium against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is the first in franchise history against an East division opponent â in the club's fifth game. However, both pre-season games were played against an Eastern club, but this is the first ever against the Ti-Cats. The Renegades fell both times - 18-11 vs Toronto Argonauts on June 13 and 36-6 @ Montreal Alouettes on June 20 - although the club did use the training camp contests to evaluate players.
Alphonso Roundtree, who began the season with the Toronto Argonauts, will start at defensive back, replacing injured veteran Gerald Vaughn. Furthermore, defensive lineman Jerome Haywood, who was re-signed as a free agent on Sunday, will replace defensive end Michael Boireau in the front seven. Boireau has temporarily left the club to attend to a family emergency.
The game will mark Haywood's professional debut. The San Diego State grad, who attended the first part of training camp with the âGaders, was not able to play against the Argos in the pre-season due to a slight back injury.
Also in are import wide receiver Kevin Alexander, replacing slotback Donnie Ashley. Furthermore, Canadian safety Donnavan Carter returns to the lineup after sitting the last two games. Ottawa native Dave Miller-Johnston will play his third consecutive game as the team's placekicker.
Game time for the home contest, televised nationally on both TSN and RDS, is 7:30 pm.
