Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced today they have added Scott Squires to the coaching staff where he will oversee special teams. Squires was a guest coach at Edmonton's training camp in 2001. Eskimo Director of Football Operations and Head Coach Danny Maciocia says, "Scott brings a great deal of experience and he's very well-rounded. He's been a head coach and he's coached both offense and defense. We're excited to have him as part of our staff."
Squires joins the Eskimos after eleven years as head coach at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, California. He first joined the Kingsmen staff in 1989 and was responsible for coaching the defensive line and long snappers. He then spent the 1990 season at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas where he coached the running backs. He returned to CLU in 1991 and served as offensive coordinator during the 1993 and 1994 seasons. He was named head coach on Feb. 29, 1996 and, in just his second season, Squires guided the Kingsmen to the program's first true conference championship when the team won a share of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title. He was named the conference Coach of the Year.
Scott began his coaching career in 1988 when he was a player/coach for the American Football Ambassador (AFA) in Australia and New Zealand. He coached the inside linebackers and special teams and the squad went undefeated.
Squires attended Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, Wash.) and was a four-year letterman in football, taking the field at linebacker and on special teams. He was a member of the Lutes' 1987 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II Championship squad.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity and challenge that lies ahead," says Squires. "The Eskimos are a good football club and I think Danny's a good coach. I'm looking forward to getting up there and helping the team get back into the playoffs."
With the hiring of Squires, Malvin Hunter will now be in charge of the defensive line after spending the past two seasons looking after special teams. Hunter brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He was a dominant force on the defensive line over eight seasons in Edmonton (1993-2000), earning the nickname "Big Game". The three-time West Division All-Star ('96, '97, '98) still ranks eighth on the team's all-time defensive tackles list (323) and fourth on the sack list (66).
