(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos are saddened by the passing of former Eskimo Head Coach Joe Faragalli at his home in Rhode Island after a lengthy illness. "This hits our organization very hard and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Lore and their entire family," says long-time friend Hugh Campbell. "The Eskimo story would be much different without Joe. He was an extraordinary teacher. He demanded excellence. His passion was infectious and he made life more fun. I enjoyed my time with Joe in Houston and Edmonton. He had a lot to do with the success we all enjoyed."

Joe coached four seasons for the Eskimos from 1987-1990. He is fifth on the Eskimo list for most wins as a coach with a 46-24-0 record. He led the Esks to two Grey Cup appearances in 1987 and 1990, with a victory in 1987 over the Toronto Argonauts.

Faragalli was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1929 and played college ball at Villanova. He served four years with the United States Army before beginning his coaching career at a high school in Philadelphia. He broke into the pro coaching ranks and the CFL when he signed with Winnipeg in 1967 as an offensive coach. He won the CFL's Coach of the Year in Saskatchewan in 1981. Coach Faragalli built a reputation for creating offensive excellence and for developing young quarterbacks such as Dieter Brock, Warren Moon and Tracy Ham.
