Edmonton Elks News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Eskimos announced today that running back Thomas Haskins will not play this season because of a benign brain tumour.
Haskins, who signed as a free agent with Edmonton on February 22, 2003, was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on March 21st. He underwent surgery on March 26th and has recently been given a clean bill of health, but has not received medical clearance to play football.
"Our only concern is for the health of Thomas and the well being of his family. We hope Thomas will come to Edmonton periodically throughout the season to be around his teammates," said Eskimo Chief Operating Officer Rick LeLacheur. "Beyond that, it's still far too early to talk about what this could do to Thomas' playing career."
"First and foremost, I'm grateful to be alive and I'll continue working towards regaining my health." Thomas Haskins said.
Haskins says he started experiencing headaches during off-season workouts. Haskins spent the last six seasons with the Montreal Alouettes where he distinguished himself as one of the CFL's offensive threats as a running back, receiver and kick returner.
The Edmonton Eskimos open their 2003 training camp Sunday, May 25th at Concordia University College of Alberta. Edmonton Eskimo 2003 season tickets are now available, ranging in price from $109 to $350. Call (780) 448-ESKS or 1-800-667-3757 to get yours today!
