BC Lions sign Defensive Lineman Algie Atkinson, Linebacker Leo Caires, and Wide Receiver Rob Turner

VANCOUVER, B.C. May 13, 2003 – BC Lions General Manager and Head Coach, Wally Buono, today signed Defensive Lineman Algie Atkinson, Linebacker Leo Caires, and Wide Receiver Rob Turner. In keeping with team policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

Atkinson, a 6'4", 241-pound native of Jamaica, was a four-year letterman and started in 29 of 45 games at the University of Kansas. He finished with 190 career tackles, including a school-record of 24 sacks and 35 tackles for loss. In 2001, he earned an All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention after recording 71 tackles, with 11 sacks, and causing 3 fumbles. Prior to signing with the Lions, Atkinson had a stint with the Green Bay Packers.

Caires, a 6'1, 228-pound player, originally came to Wyoming as a walk-on, but soon earned himself a scholarship. In 2000, he was the starter at weak-side linebacker for the first two games but suffered a broken leg in the second game and missed the remainder of the season. He became one of the team's top special teams players and was elected by his teammates as a captain for two consecutive seasons. At Maui Highschool he was a terrific rodeo performer and was the state champion in steer wrestling, as well as bull riding, and was the area All-Around Cowboy. He graduated in May of 2001 with a bachelor's degree in animal science.

Turner, a 6'2", 200-pound Central Michigan attendant, earned first team Verizon Academic All-America honors in 2001. He caught 50 passes for 668 yards and four touchdowns last fall and together with a teammate scored a school-record 98-yard touchdown pass against Northern Illinois. The business administration student with a 3.95 cumulative GPA, caught seven passes against Michigan State and Western Michigan, caught five passes for 121 yards and made two touchdowns against NIU and four for 108 yards against Eastern Michigan. During his senior year in high-school he suffered a broken but still scored eight touchdowns.
