Errors Best Suns in Finale in Delmarva

Hagerstown Suns News Release

SALISBURY, MD - Two pivotal, run-scoring errors by the Suns proved to be the difference in Hagerstown's 5-4 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Perdue Stadium Tuesday.

The first mistake came in the second inning. With a runner on second and one out, Gilbert Laramade a throwing error on a Ben Breazeale grounder that allowed the first run of the game to score for Delmarva.

The next came in the fifth, when a tailor-made double-play ball turned into another throwing error. Jose Sanchez made the error, which allowed two runs to score, giving the Shorebirds a 4-2 advantage.

Delmarva (40-11) got one more run on a wild pitch in the fifth, capping off a four-run inning filled with Hagerstown mishaps. That fifth run would be enough for the Shorebirds to win it and take four out of five in the series.

Justin Connell hit his second home run of the season in the seventh, a two-run shot that brought the Suns to within one, but it wasn't enough. Hagerstown (23-29) got an RBI single from Lara in the third and another from Sanchez in the fourth, but that was all for the Suns offense.

Ryan Tapani (L, 2-4) got the start for the Suns, his second of the season, and was solid through four. But the runs in the fifth made his line of four and 2/3 innings, three earned runs and five strikeouts look a little less compelling.

However, the Hagerstown bullpen was fantastic, and was able to keep the Suns in the game. Chandler Day recorded seven outs without allowing a run in relief of Tapani, while Trey Turner followed with a scoreless eighth. Day has now gone nine and 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Turner has now struck out 13 batters in six innings since being activated from Extended Spring Training May 8.

Gray Fenter (W, 4-1) toed the rubber for the Shorebirds, and put together a solid start. He allowed two earned runs and struck out six over five innings. Behind him, relievers Matt De La Rosa and Zach Matson did their jobs to keep the lead in tact. Closer Tim Naughton then came on in the ninth and worked a one-two-three inning to record his 10th save.

After an off day Wednesday, the Suns return home to start a four-game series with the Rome Braves at Municipal Stadium Thursday night at 7:05. Gabriel Noguera (2-1, 4.66 ERA) will take the mound for the Braves, while the Suns have not yet named a starting pitcher for the Thirsty Thursday battle.

The Suns return home for the final time in May for a four game set with the Rome Braves May 30-June 2. Hagerstown hosts a promotionally loaded stand beginning with Thirsty Thursday May 30. After that, cinema takes over Municipal Stadium Friday and Saturday with Star Wars night and Harry Potter night, respectively. Hagerstown closes the series with Sunday Funday June 2.
