PEARL, MS -- The Atlanta Braves have signed free agent infielder Erik Castro and assigned him to Double-A Mississippi.
Castro, 26, was hitting .175 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and six RBI through 35 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was released by the Astros on July 1. Castro was originally selected by the Houston Astros in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of San Diego State University. Last season at Double-A Corpus Christi, Castro hit .280 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs and 65 RBI. He hit a career high 27 homers in 2012 at High-A Lancaster while ranking second in the California League in RBI (108), tied for third in long balls and walks (78).
The Mississippi roster has 24 active players and 7 disabled.
