BayBears Blast Past Blue Wahoos in 6-1 Win

PENSACOLA, FL - The Mobile BayBears powered their way to a 6-1 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Tuesday at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Three different players went deep for the BayBears including starting RHP Braden Shipley. After allowing just one earn run over four innings, Shipley turned the ball over to the BayBears bullpen who combined to shutout the Blue Wahoos over the final five frames. With the win, Mobile improved to 72-46, the best record in the Southern League and with a loss by the Jacksonville Suns Tuesday night, Mobile reclaimed the outright lead for first place in the South Division Second-half title race.
Shipley look the mound for the BayBears for just his second Double-A start. Already leading 1-0 after a Dustin Martin RBI double in the first inning, Shipley helped his own cause in the top half of the fourth inning when he drove out a solo home run to left for his first career homer. The righty would be forced to settle for a no decision, exiting after only pitching four innings but he did limit the Blue Wahoos to just one run on three hits while striking out five batters.
Shipley's blast to left was the second time in five days a BayBears starting pitcher had hit a home run. RHP Aaron Blair who makes the start Wednesday night accomplished the same feat in his last outing against the Tennessee Smokies at Hank Aaron Stadium on Friday night, August 8th.
Mobile added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, all via the long ball. Brandon Drury hit a solo shot to left to begin the frame and after Dustin Martin reached base in the following at-bat, Gerson Montilla hits a two-run homer to left, his second home run in his last two games to push the BayBears lead to 5-1. In the seventh inning, the BayBears drove home one more run to take the 6-1 advantage and eventual win.
Wednesday, the BayBears return to action in Pensacola with game two of a five game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos scheduled for 6:30 PM Wednesday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. RHP Aaron Blair (3-1, 3.09) will take the mound for the BayBears opposite RHP Jon Moscot (7-10, 3.14) for the Blue Wahoos.
