Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - After one of the most entertaining games of the 2021-22 season on Friday night - which saw the Erie Otters fall in the final minutes - Erie would host the Flint Firebirds one last time on Saturday night. The Saturday night affair would play host to Hockey Fights Cancer night (pres. by UPMC Health Plan & UPMC Hamot), as the team would don purple cancer jerseys, with post-game auction proceeds benefitting the Hillman Cancer Fund. An emotional night would provide all the motivation either team would need in the final weeks of the season.
A slow offensive start to the game would lead into a nearly-mirrored performance from the night prior. Scoring would start just 2:23 in from the first shot of the night. Flint's James Mayotte (1) would net his second-career OHL goal on a sneaky shot from the blue line. Past the halfway mark of the frame, the Otters would take the lone power play of the night, and Spencer Sova (7) would take advantage of it for his second goal in three games. This would be major for Erie after going 0/5 on the man-advantage on Friday night. After 20 minutes, shots and score would remain even, 8-8 and 1-1 respectively.
The second period would be a frame of highlights for either side, with the goaltenders strutting their best stuff in the contest. Erie would open scoring with back-to-back goals in under a minute from Noah Sedore (12) and Lucas Ross (3) to take a 3-1 lead. Just past the halfway mark of the game, Riley Piercey (26) would get the Firebirds back within one from Amadeus Lombardi. With highlight-reel saves from both goaltenders to close the period, Erie would hold a 3-2 lead going into the final frame, with a 19-6 shot advantage in the period.
Third period action would waste no time in getting underway, as Christian Kyrou (14) would score the eventual game-winner only :31 into the final period. It wouldn't take long for Tag Bertuzzi (13) to make it a one-goal game yet again, just 2:13 into the period. With a tight, one-goal game through much of the stretch, Brett Bressette (13) would blast the necessary insurance the Otters needed to hold on for a hard-fought, tight 5-3 win over Flint. For the first time this season, the Erie Otters would down the Flint Firebirds on home ice, and it would come in the final meeting in Erie between the two in the regular season. This would come as Erie's second win of the season against Flint, and give them their 21st win of the year.
Just one game remains in the season series between Erie and Flint, taking place in the Vehicle City on Saturday, April 9. Erie stays at home for the next three games, starting on Wednesday, March 9 against the Niagara IceDogs, before hosting the Windsor Spitfires for a pair of a crucial Western Conference games on Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12.
