June 11, 2023 - Northwest League (NWL)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
The Emeralds dropped the series finale against the Tri-City Dust Devils by a final score of 8-4. The Ems drop to 28-29 on the year and sit 4 games out of first place in the Northwest League.
Tri-City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Alexander Ramirez led the inning off with a steal and was able to swipe 2nd a couple of days later. Werner Blakely followed it up by slicing a double into the gap, scoring Ramirez. A few batters later D'Shawn Knowles was up to bat and hit a pop out to center field that Blakely was able to tag up and score. The next batter, Joe Stewart ripped a triple down the line and scored Ryan Hernandez to give the Dust Devils the 3-0 lead.
In the 3rd inning they extended their lead. It was a 2-out RBI-Single from Myles Emmerson that scored both Arol Vera and Alexander Ramirez. In the 4th inning they continued to add on their lead after Arol Vera hit an RBI-Single that scored Adrian Placencia. In the 5th inning Gabe Matthews ripped a single to the outfield that scored a run and Joe Stewart also got in on the action after he hit into a groundout that scored a run. After the first five innings the Ems trailed 8-0.
The Ems offense finally broke things open in the bottom of the 6th inning. Brett Auerbach led the inning off with a double down the left field field. Michael Wielansky got tagged by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Ghordy Santos was able to rip a baseball down the right field line and both runners were able to score and Santos got all the way to third. The next batter, Grant McCray, grounded out on the next at-bat but Santos was able to score on the play to cut into the deficit. The Emeralds trailed 8-3.
In the 8th inning the Emeralds tacked on another run. Victor Bericoto got ahold of a baseball and sent it over the wayy for his 3rd home run of the series. He ended the 6-game series with 10 total base hits. It was an incredibly impressive performance from him.
The Ems couldn't muster anything up in the 9th and fell by a final score of 8-4. A big bright spot today for Eugene was some of the arms out of the bullpen. Tanner Kiest, Hunter Dula and Ty Weber pitched the final four innings for Eugene and allowed just 2 hits, 2 walks and recorded 4 strikeouts. It's always great to be able to walk away with something positive after a tough loss, and this Ems bullpen really showed out once again today.
The Ems are now a game below five hundred at 28-29. They will have a chance to make up some pretty serious ground however this upcoming week at Spokane. Spokane will be in first place in the Northwest League heading to that series. While a lot of things are going to have to go right for Eugene to win the 1st half title as there is just 9 games remaining in the 1st half, if they're able to string together some wins against the Indians they'll quickly find themselves moving up the leader board.
