Eugene Emeralds News Release

The Eugene Emeralds took game 3 against the Everett Aquasox by a final score of 9-2. The Emeralds move to 37-35 on the season and 3-3 in the 2nd half.

The Emeralds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Grant McCray led the game off with a double and Carter Howell followed it up with an infield single to put runners on the corners for Victor Bericoto. Bericoto ripped a single to the outfield to plate the first run of the ballgame. That brought up the cleanup hitter, Jared Dupere, who crushed a ball down the right field line. He was able to extend it into a triple and both runners were able to score easily to give Eugene the 3-0 lead after the 1st inning.

The Emeralds added another run in the 2nd inning. Ghordy Santos had a 1-out single and was able to steal 2nd and advance to 3rd after the ball got away from Everett's 2nd baseman. Grant McCray hit a baseball out to left field that was deep enough to score Santos and give Eugene the 4-0 lead. The Emeralds wanted to keep on adding runs and they did just that in the 3rd inning. Jared Dupere doubled with 1-out and after Adrian Sugastey popped out, Aeverson Arteaga stepped into the box. He was able to hit a no-doubt home run out to right center field to give Eugene the 6-0 lead. It was great to see Arteaga get his bat going tonight as he hit his 8th home run of the year.

The Emeralds starter, John Michael Bertrand, was excellent tonight on the bump. He went 5 innings and allowed just 3 base hits and 1 walk. He struck out 6 batters over those 5 innings of work as he earned the victory in tonight's ballgame. It's his fourth win in just 10 appearances this season with Eugene. Nick Morreale pitched the 6th inning and struck out a batter. Mat Olsen pitched the 7th inning and struck out 2 batters and allowed just 1 base hit.

Tanner Kiest was the only pitcher that the Aquasox were able to get to tonight as he allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Tyler Myrick closed things down for Eugene in the 9th and after allowing a couple of hits and a walk, he was able to get out of the bases loaded jam to end the game. It wasn't a save opportunity for Myrick, but his ERA has now dropped to 1.08 on the season. He continues to be one the best arms out of the bullpen in the Northwest League.

The Emeralds added a couple of runs of insurance in the top of the 8th. Adrian Sugastey hit a single to get the inning going. Luis Toribio was able to single a couple of batters later and Sugastey came home to score on the play. With two outs that brought up Ghordy Santos who has been turning things around in a big way at the plate the past month or so. He was able to connect with a baseball and send a no-doubt shot out to center field for the 2-run blast. It was his 6th home run of the year and his 2nd base hit of the game. He also got the start today at 2nd base and made a handful of defensive gems on the diamond. It was a great game all-around tonight for Santos.

The Emeralds were on track for the shutout after getting shutout in yesterday's ballgame, but with two outs Alberto Rodriguez was able to double down the left field line. The cleanup hitter, Hogan Windish, followed it up with a single to the outfield to give Everett their first run of the evening. The next batter, Axel Sanchez, was able to double into the gap and Windish came home to score on the play for Everett's 2nd run of the evening. Even though Eugene gave up the 2 late runs, it was a fantastic all-around performance today from Eugene's pitchers.

The Emeralds now will have a chance to even up the series against the AquaSox tomorrow night with first pitch set for 7:05 P.M. They've struggled this year against Everett, so it was a positive sign to see them have such a great all-around performance. They'll look to carry that momentum into the matchup tomorrow. The Emeralds sit at 3-3 in the 2nd half and they'll look to keep climbing up the standings.
