El Paso Diablos News Release
On Tuesday night, the El Paso Diablos scored the game's first run in the middle innings, but the Shreveport-Bossier Captains scored the final eight runs of the game behind a stellar performance by Ryan DiPietro to win the series opener. On Wednesday, the script was flipped, as it was the Captains scoring first - on a sixth-inning solo home run by Jorge Alvarez - before the Diablos got the final five runs, and Shaun Ellis threw a 142-pitch, complete-game, six-hitter to beat Shreveport-Bossier 5-1 in front of 967 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
Ellis (8-1) walked four, struck out five, and allowed just two extra-base hits (but neither coming with a runner on base). He allowed exactly one hit in each of the first six innings, only allowing one runner to third base and only had two runners on once - in the first inning with two outs.
Meanwhile, Captains rookie Cody Kelley (1-1) was even better than Ellis for the first five innings. The righty allowed only three singles and a walk, but gave up three straight singles with one out in the sixth. However, he reared back to strike out Kyle Nichols and Adam Deleo swinging to keep the game scoreless.
After Alvarez's leadoff shot (his second homer in as many days) in the sixth gave the Captains (32-24, 3-6 2nd half) the lead, El Paso (21-34, 2-7) came right back in the top of the seventh. Kelley hit Rico Santana to start the inning, and then left after Mike Provencher's base hit. Justin Young came in and threw a pickoff throw into center to advance the runners, before Jeff Vincent singled to tie the game. Hector Bernal then doubled to left-center to bring in two more and give the Diablos the lead for good.
El Paso got its two insurance runs after a controversial play in the top of the eighth. With the count 0-1, Deleo started to swing on a ball that appeared to hit his hand. At first, home plate umpire Ryan Thacker ruled it a foul ball. After Deleo protested, the umpires huddled up, and first base umpire Bryan Childe overruled Thacker and awarded Deleo first base on a hit-by-pitch. That led to Captains manager Ricky VanAsselberg's third ejection of the year, when he argued with Childe after the decision went against his club.
Now with Deleo at first and one out, Provencher singled and a wild pitch brought in the fourth El Paso run, before Vincent knocked in another with a double.
Tiring in the ninth, Ellis walked Bryan Frichter to start the inning and sent Brian Peterson to first on a free pass with one out, but he got Bryan Cooksey to fly out and got Bryan Sabatella on a slow grounder to second to complete his own win.
Notes: Ellis joined Pensacola's David Nathanson as pitchers to get a complete game win against the Captains in the last week...Andres Rodriguez's 19-game hitting streak was snapped with an 0-for-4 day. Kelley had a season (and pro career) high eight strikeouts...Jovanny Rosario and Uriak Marquez each had two hits for the Captains...Eight Diablos had at least one hit...Deleo entered the game in the fourth for original starting catcher Benji Johnson, who did not suffer any obvious injury.
