Ellis Sets New QMJHL Record, Cormier and Laaouan Dominate as Isles Blank Eagles
March 21, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Another game goes by, and yet another brick wall is put up in goal by Colten Ellis.
The St. Louis Blues prospect recorded yet another shutout, his seventh on the season and eighteenth of his QMJHL career. He now holds the all-time QMJHL record for most career shutouts while also tying the QMJHL single-season high. Lukas Cormier and Noah Laaouan led the charge offensively from the blueline each recording three points as the Isles would down the Cape Breton Eagles 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
"We played a solid 60 minute game today," said Islanders head coach Jim Hulton on the victory. "We stayed patient in our positioning and capitalized on our chances. We are thrilled to all be a part of Colten's record setting day!"
The goaltenders showcased very well early on as Ellis and Eagles starter Nicolas Ruccia went save for save early on. It took a little time, but eventually the Isles found a crack in Ruccia's armour; Lukas Cormier would thread the needle on a perfect cross-ice pass to Keiran Gallant and the Covehead product would make no mistake, going high on the rookie netminder for his fifth goal of the season.
The 1-0 score would hold until the second period until Bailey Peach broke the deadlock on a near-perfect play. Peach would finish off a tic-tac-toe play with Thomas Casey and Oscar Plandowski on a 3-on-1 opportunity midway through the second period, giving the Falmouth, Nova Scotia product his third goal on the year and pushing the Isles ahead a little further.
Cape Breton would find themselves in a bevy of penalty trouble throughout the second period and eventually, Charlottetown would take advantage. Just ten seconds into Charlottetown's third consecutive powerplay, Cormier would find Laaouan with a long pass and the former Eagle would burn his former team, going upstairs on Ruccia for his fifth goal on the year.
Ben Boyd would add the final nail in the coffin late in the game to secure the victory for Charlottetown. The big 17-year-old has been stepping up against Cape Breton with all of his QMJHL points coming at the hands of the Eagles. Cormier would finish with three assists while Laaouan would add two assists to his goal. Plandowski, Casey, and Cedric Desruisseaux would all add single assists in the victory.
The Islanders will have a bit of a break this week but are back in action next on Saturday, March 27th against the Halifax Mooseheads. Season Ticket Holders will use Ticket #16 to enter this game.
