Eagles Shut out by Islanders in Sydney
March 21, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Cape Breton fell to history making Colten Ellis and the Charlottetown Islanders by a count of 4-0 at Centre 200 on Sunday afternoon. Ellis recorded his 18th career shutout, moving into sole possession of the record in the history of the QMJHL.
Despite a quick turnaround from Saturday night's game in Halifax, the Eagles came out strong in the first period, and outshot Charlottetown by a count of 12-9. Unfortunately for the home side, it was Charlottetown getting the only goal as Keiran Gallant put the puck over Nicolas Ruccia. The entire period was played 5 on 5.
As was the case in the first period, it took some time to find a goal in the second period- just one goal had been scored through the first 34 minutes. The game opened up a bit on a slick passing play when Thomas Casey moved the puck to Oscar Plandowski in the slot who immediately flipped to Bailey Peach who finished to make it 2-0.
Things went from bad to worse as shortly after Charlottetown found themselves on the power play and it took just nine seconds into the man advantage to make it 3-0. The Islanders were in the driver's seat heading into the third period.
The Eagles had a power play that carried over into the third period, but Charlottetown was able to kill it off. Ben Boyd scored on a diagonal feed from Noah Laaouan a few minutes later that would conclude the scoring for the contest.
Ellis stopped 22 shots in his historic shutout victory. Ruccia stopped 30 of 34 in the loss.
The Eagles dressed three affiliate players from the MHL's Truro Bearcats due to injuries incurred Saturday night in Halifax. Defensemen Tanner Greatorex and Jacob Christie skated on the blueline while goaltender Frédéric Plourde served as the team's backup netminder.
The Eagles are back in action this week for a home and home with the Halifax Mooseheads, starting with a home tilt on Wednesday evening. Game time is 7 PM. There is now limited availability to purchase tickets for Eagles home games- full details can be found at https://bit.ly/3jmSmML
The game will also be broadcast on Eastlink Television, and you can also hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
