El Paso Locomotive FC News Release
EL PASO, Texas - El Paso Locomotive (7-6-4, 25 points, West-5) earned a point on the road against Detroit City FC after a 1-1 game that aired nationally on ESPN. Fresh from international duty, Midfielder Eric Calvillo scored the lone Locomotive goal while four incredible saves from Goalkeeper Evan Newton kept the game level.
El Paso Locomotive weathered high Detroit City FC pressure throughout the first half. Detroit got the better use of possession, quickly testing Goalkeeper Evan Newton with a two-on-one counterattack but in the end a simple shot was easily saved by Newton. The aggressive pressure from DCFC eventually paid off for the hosts, with Pato Botello-Faz opening the scoring in the 23rd minute. Locomotive came alive after the opening goal, with Midfielder Nick Hinds nearly finding the equalizer just a minute later. The equalizer would come in the 32nd minute from Calvillo, who powered his shot deep into the net.
The second half contrasted the first with Locomotive making the better of possession as Head Coach John Hutchinson injected speed into the game with critical substitutions. Midfielder Christiano Francois used his speed to break past the Detroit City defense and create chances for Locomotive. The chances would either go wide or skip in to DCFC Goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher. Shortly after the 75th minute, the match turned into a tense back-and-forth with both sides pressing numbers forward looking for the advantage goal. With some heroics from Newton through the second half to keep things level, Locomotive and Detroit City share the points on the national stage.
