Oakland Roots Score First and Leave Texas with a Point
June 18, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
Oakland Roots grabbed the lead early through the head of Joseph Nane following some smooth build up play and an assist from Juan Azocar. The goal gave Oakland the 1-0 lead inside of 30 minutes. Azocar nearly made it two moments later but it was not to be. Blanchette was then called on three times in a row to come up big to keep the match level heading into the final moments of the 1st half. San Antonio was able to finally grab an equalizer however in first half stoppage time through Samuel Adeniran as the two sides went into the locker level at 1-1.
The first 30 minutes of the second half played out balanced with few chances falling to either side. Both teams made multiple subs and the game began to slow down due to the heat in San Antonio. Paul Blanchette was forced into three more huge second half saves to keep Roots level heading into stoppage time. The game became a lot about injuries late on as both Azocar and Lindo Mfeka were forced off with injuries. After a more than 100 minute battle with 12 minutes of stoppage time the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Oakland now returns home to Laney to take on Atlanta United 2 Saturday, June 25th at 7:00 PM PT for Soul Night.
