OTTAWA - Two runs in the eighth inning would be the difference in a seesaw affair that saw the Trois-Rivieres Aigles top the Ottawa Champions 8-6.

The game saw three lead changes and only had the winner decided in the bottom half of the eighth, when LHP Scott Maine allowed two of RHP Alex Vargas' runs to come across the plate to give the Aigles the narrow victory in the series opener.

Ottawa's offence did break out in a large way, with the team hitting two home runs. The Champions also out-hit the Aigles 10-8, but committed three errors. OF Steve Brown, a former Aigle, had a solo shot in the fifth. INF Daniel Bick had the second one, a towering fly ball that just squeaked over the fence in left-centre field.

RHP Jordan Kurokawa was able to last until the fifth inning, but threw lots of pitches due to some defensive errors behind him, according to Champions acting manager Jared Lemieux. He was still able to get out of the game with no decision, allowing just two runs on three hits over those five innings.

LANIER ABSENT

The Champions and Aigles will resume play Friday night in Trois-Rivieres. Ottawa will have their manager back, after Hal Lanier was absent due to attending his number retirement ceremony in Winnipeg.

Lanier's No. 22 was raised to the roof of Shaw Park, home of the American Association's Goldeyes. Ottawa's manager of four seasons was part of the Goldeyes coaching staff as manager for nine years, from 1996 to 2005.

Tickets for every Champions home game can be purchased at ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office or by calling the Champs at 613-745-2255 (BALL).
