Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ROME, Ga. - A massive eight-run sixth inning for the Rome Braves was the difference in a 10-4 decision over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium Thursday evening.
Rome improves to 87, 38-46 and has now won nine games in a row against Charleston at home. The RiverDogs drop to 6-9, 37-47 overall.
Charleston led 4-2 into the bottom of the sixth, but Rome exploded for eight runs on six hits to snatch a 10-4 lead, as the first nine Braves of the frame reached base. Edward Salcedo delivered a bases-clearing triple against Dickson Marquez (0-5) to initiate the eruption, and was followed by Braeden Schlehuber's RBI single and Ramon Flores' two-run triple.
Cory Rasmus (6-4) left trailing 4-2, but picks up the victory for Rome, tossing 6.0 innings with four runs allowed on six hits, while walking two and fanning two.
Rome took a 1-0 lead in the first against spot-starter Ronny Marte on Todd Cunningham's RBI single, but DeAngelo Mack threw out Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg at the plate to end the inning.
Schlehuber's bloop RBI single to left-centerfield upped the Braves lead to 2-0 in the second.
Marte, who was filling in for Jose Ramirez due to illness, lasted 3.1 innings in his first start since Aug. 2008, surrendering two runs on six hits with one punchout.
Charleston did not notch its first hit against Rasmus until the fourth inning, but the RiverDogs received a Neil Medchill RBI double and consecutive RBI singles from Rob Lyerly and Kyle Higashioka to nab a 3-2 lead.
Medchil doubled for the second time with one out in the sixth and scored with two outs on Lyerly's RBI double that popped out of the glove of left-fielder Jake Hanson on a diving attempt increasing the margin to 4-2.
Medchill and Lyerly both had two hits for the RiverDogs.
Game two of the five-game series is set for Friday at 7 p.m., with the RiverDogs pitching right-hander Sean Black (4-6, 5.03 ERA) against Rome righty Robinson Lopez (3-5, 3.48 ERA).
