Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa â The Arena Football League's 18th season is rapidly coming to a close. The drive for ArenaBowl XVIII gets more intense every week and eight former Quad City Steamwheelers are helping their respective teams make their final playoff push. There are four spots in the eight-team playoff already spoken for. The remaining four spots could go to any one of eight teams still fighting for a spot in the post-season.
The expansion New Orleans VooDoo clinched a playoff spot with a 44-40 victory over the Detroit Fury. In the game, former âWheelers offensive specialist and current VooDoo wide receiver/linebacker Ira Gooch had two receptions in limited action.
There are four teams who all have 8-6 records and sitting on the playoff bubble. If the playoffs were to start today, one of these teams would not be in: Los Angeles Avengers, New York Dragons, Orlando Predators, or Austin Wranglers. All four were in action against each other this past weekend.
The Los Angeles Avengers pulled out a 58-53 victory in New York against the Dragons this past weekend to give them a slight edge over the Dragons.
Former âWheelers went against each other with Avengers lineman Sean McNamara playing against Dragons' wide receiver/linebacker Chris Anthony and lineman Tim McGill.
McNamara had an assisted tackle in the win, while Anthony caught a 26-yard pass and had an assisted tackle on defense. McGill had a sack, quarterback hurry and a pass break up in the loss.
The Predators traveled into Austin to take on the Wranglers and came out with a 43-26 win. In the loss, former âWheelers defensive specialist Brent Browner had 3.5 tackles and a forced fumble.
The San Jose Sabercats are one of the four teams who have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, but are still fighting for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They took one step back on Sunday when the fell 44-35 to the Las Vegas Gladiators. The Gladiators have now won four straight to keep their playoffs hopes alive.
In the win, fullback/linebacker Frank Carter and wide receiver/defensive back Dennison Robinson had major impacts. Carter had five carries for 10 yards and 2.5 tackles, and Robinson had six receptions for 48 yards, including a touchdown, as well as two interceptions on defense.
In a game with no playoff implications, the Columbus Destroyers beat the Grand Rapids Rampage 59-28 with former âWheelers lineman Jamarr Ward adding 3.5 tackles, a sack, tackle for loss and pass break up in the Destroyers win.
