Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Quad City Steamwheelers wide receiver/linebacker LaRico Cole will be returning home this week. Unfortunately he is not a native of San Diego, Calif., the same place where the Steamwheelers are traveling this weekend to take on the Riptide. Cole, however will be returning home to Memphis, Tenn., as a member of the Memphis Xplorers.

Cole was traded to the Xplorers today by the Steamwheelers for future considerations. Cole had been on the suspension list for a week and a half now due to a violation of team rules.

Cole entered the season as the starting wide receiver/linebacker for the Steamwheelers and caught 10 balls for 162 yards and three touchdowns in four games this season. He is still fifth on the team in tackles with 13.0. Cole originally joined the Steamwheelers last season and played behind the likes of offensive specialist and AFL promoted Ira Gooch, and wide receiver/defensive backs Tim Dodge and Jeff Hewitt.

In limited action, Cole was fifth on the team in receiving as he caught eight passes for 110 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games. Cole had six tackles and was credited for an assisted tackle for a loss.

So far this season, Hewitt and Dodge have been on the receiving end of most of quarterback Ronnie Gordon's passes. Hewitt has hauled in 37 passes for 650 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Dodge has added 48 receptions for 770 yards and has matched Hewitt in touchdown receptions with 12.

Cole is expected to play wide receiver/defensive back for the Xplorers, who have struggled this season and sit in second place of the American Conference's Mid-South Division with a record of 3-3 behind division leading Tennessee Valley, who holds a 5-1 record.

The Steamwheelers and Xplorers do not play each other this season, and the only way the two teams could meet would be in the ArenaCup championship game.

This weekend the Xplorers will be on the west coast as they travel to take on the Bakersfield Blitz. The Steamwheelers are also on the West coast, and will take on the Riptide at 9:00 p.m. CDT.
