Eight Former Alexandria Players Selected in the 2014 MLB Draft

Alexandria,Minn- The 2014 MLB Player Draft was held June 5th-7th and Alexandria baseball was well represented having eight players chosen, seven former and one current player in all. A total of 175 former Northwoods League players were drafted in 2014.

Andrew Sohn (2013) became the first player from the Alexandria Blue Anchors franchise to be drafted, Sohn a shortstop was selected in the 6th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. During the 2013 season Sohn hit .349 in 56 games played.

"It is a dream come true for me," said Sohn. "All my hard work has paid off, and now I can begin a new journey in professional baseball."

Two rounds later former Alexandria Beetle and league MVP Ben Moore (2012) was selected with the 254th overall pick by the Boston Red Sox. The outfielder was a standout during his time in Alexandria hitting at a .335 clip with 16 homeruns and 84 RBI in 65 games.

The 10th round saw former pitcher Corey Miller (2011) selected by the Oakland Athletics. The Pepperdine University product was selected with the 312th pick. During his time in Alexandria Miller appeared in 9 games, pitching 43.2 innings with a 3.50 ERA.

Catcher Jaime Ritchie (2013) was the 4th player selected. The Belmont University standout was the first pick of the 13th round when the Houston Astros took him off the board. Ritchie became the 2nd Anchor to be drafted in franchise history.

Former Beetle and Michigan State Outfielder Jimmy Pickens (2012) was drafted in 15th round by the Cincinnati Reds. During his time in Alexandria Pickens hit .365 in 45 games played.

Current Blue Anchor Onas Farfan (2014) was drafted with the 620th pick by the hometown Minnesota Twins. Farfan a sophomore at Ridgewater Community College appeared in one game for the Anchors. He went 6 innings with 4 strikeouts while allowing just 2 runs.

"I've known Onas since his days with Frank White's MLB RBI program," owner Adam Barta said. "He is a fantastic young man and has a great future. We were lucky to have him be a part of the Anchor family if only for a short while."

Selected in the 22nd round by the New York Mets was Will Fulmer (2011-2012) from Montevalla University. During the 2011 season Fulmer hit .182 in 3 games before coming back in 2012 to hit .371 in 38 games.

The final player to be selected was Michael Theofanpoulous (2011). The Cal-Berkeley product was selected in the 30th round by the Minnsota Twins.

The Anchors are currently on a six game road trip and will return home on Monday June 16th vs. the St. Cloud Rox. First pitch is slated for 6:35 pm.
