Anchors' late rally falls short in loss to Border Cats

Thunder Bay, Ontario - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Thunder Bay Border Cats Tuesday night at Tbaytel Park by a score of 9-8. The loss puts the Anchors at 3-12 on the season

The Border Cats were first on the board against Anchors starter Blake Bass. Nick Studer started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Robb Paller drove him in with a base hit and went to third on a two-out double by Sal Taormina. Both runners came around to score on an Adam Collins base hit and the Border Cats led 3-0.

In the top of the third, the Anchors got on board versus Zack Speer. Jake Bergren led off the inning with an infield base hit and he stole second. With Kris Goodman at the plate, two wild pitches allowed Bergren to score and make the score 3-1.

Bergren again supplied the offense in the top of the fifth as he hit a solo homer with two outs to pull the Blue Anchors within one.

Thunder Bay scored five runs on four hits in the their half of the fifth to take a lead. Three of the runs were scored with two outs and it was highlighted by a Ty Blankmeyer double which gave the Border Cats an 8-2 advantage.

Alexandria's offense put together their best comeback effort of the season and it started in the top of the sixth. Ryan Busch drew a leadoff walk but was erased on a Roman Collins fielder's choice. Collins stole second and scored on a Ricky Sanchez base hit cutting Thunder Bay's lead to 8-3.

Dylan Dresel singled to start the seventh and a passed ball moved him to second and two wild pitches later he scored to put the Anchors down 8-4.

A two-out rally by the Anchors in the eighth tied the game. Dalton Leuschke singled with one out and after Alex Fink flied out, Dresel was hit by a pitch putting two runners on. Bergren singled in Leuschke with Dresel moving to third. Dresel scored on a wild pitch and Goodman singled in Bergren to make the score 8-7. Goodman stole second to put the tying run in scoring position and he scored on a Busch base hit to tie the game at eight.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sean Stutzman struck out the first two batters of the inning but allowed back-to-back walks and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Nick Oberg delivered the walk-off base hit to right field to give the Border Cats the 9-8 victory.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Jake Bergren (LF) - The Golden Gopher had his best day at the plate to date as he was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI.
