Eskimo fans get their first look at the 2005 version of the Green and Gold as they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers presented by the Sawmill Restaurant Group. This is the first pre-season game for both clubs and time is short to fine tune several areas before the regular season begins. The Esks have number of new faces with an abundance of CFL experience, and lots of newcomers looking to crack the line-up. Here's what to look for:
QB: Ricky Ray, Jason Maas, Khari Jones, and Jason Johnson have all enjoyed productive camps thus far. Maas has been on a âthrow-count' since camp opened in order to protect his right shoulder so look for Ray to see the majority of the snaps Friday with Jones and Johnson seeing action in the second half.
Backfield: With the departure of CFL all-time leading rusher Mike Pringle, what may ultimately be the most compelling story of training camp is the race to become the Esks' starting tailback. Ron McClendon appears to have plenty of flash but is in tough versus second-year man Reggie White and NFL veteran Elvis Joseph. Four-year Eskimo veteran Mike Bradley has looked great in camp, and is always a special-teams spark plug too.
D-line: The battle to back up CFL All-Star Joe Montford and third-year Eskimo Rashad Jeanty has been interesting. Look for solid performances out of Antico Dalton, Cedric Scott, Ja'waren Blair and Charles Alston as they look to stick.
Linebacker: Singor Mobley leads a tough and agile group including the ever-pressed A.J. Gass, as well as Jason Lamar, Rob Grant, Glen Young and Steven Marsh (moving to LB from safety). Former NFL'er Jacoby Shepherd was released on Wednesday so the battle for 3 spots is down to six players.
Merchandise: The new-look Eskimo jerseys are going quick! Game On Sports is the Edmonton Eskimos' official retailer with five Edmonton-area locations including the Team Store located at 9021-111 Avenue and their Commonwealth Stadium store on game-days.
The Eskimos open the 2005 regular season on Friday, June 24th versus the Ottawa Renegades at 7:00 pm. Buy Eskimo tickets on-line at ticketmaster.ca or call 451-8000. For more information on the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club please visit our website at www.esks.com.
