Edmonton Elks News Release
Of Special Note:
The defending CFL West Division champions hit the field for the first of two sessions on Day #1. Head Coach Tom Higgins said "The tempo was high throughout, as was the level of conditioning. Higgins spent the bulk of the first practice with the D-line and came away impressed with former NFL'ers Dorian Boose and Aaron Fields.
Not surprisingly there was plenty of media attention for Mike Pringle and Rahim Abdullah. Pringle showed no signs of lingering problems from last year's knee surgery and Abdullah who was sidelined last year with a blood clot in his heart appears in great shape. Veteran fullback Shawn Daniels was on the field.
Running back/slotback Thomas Haskins was on the field as an interested bystander. Haskins continues his recovery from removal of a benign brain tumour in late March. Haskins has been placed on the disabled list and will not play this year, but he has resumed light workouts.
QB Keith Smith looks svelte thanks to an off-season workout program that shed 19 lbs. Smith still has a long way to go to catch the Edmonton Sun's football reporter Gerry Prince who has dropped close to 70 lbs.
Pringle is wearing jersey #34 which was his old Pop Warner number and the same number as former Rider legend George Reed, who Pringle is chasing as the top rusher in CFL history.
Dan McKinnon, Esks Receivers coach said, "Our veterans have set a really good tone, and the newcomers, Reidel Anthony and Kory Bailey have been sharp."
Catch of the Day: Ed Hervey from Bart Hendricks, who showed excellent accuracy all day.
Wedding bells: Both Rahim Abdullah and Sheldon Benoit were married in the off-season.
Elfrid Payton - the 2002 CFL Defensive Player - was absent with permission from the a.m. session. To much fanfare, Elfrid arrived for the p.m. session in pure SWAC style: two toned patent leather shoes. Injuries:
None. Medicals
Four players failed medicals: Marc Pilon (DE-NIP), Larry Ram (OL-NIP), Scott Robinson (WR-NIP), Floyd Young (DB-IMP). Robinson remains in camp and will be re-evaluated.
