PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 22nd through August 28th:
Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 22nd-August 28th. The 6'3", 190 lb. slugger batted .444 (12-for-27) with one double, three home runs, seven RBI, three runs scored, one walk, four stolen bases and a .815 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Hazelbaker, who is a native of Selma, Indiana, reached base in all seven games he played in last week and had three multiple hit games, including going 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBI in an 8-4 win at Reading on Thursday night. The 24-year old tied for first among all Eastern League players in total bases (22) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in stolen bases (4-2nd), home runs (3-tied 2nd), hits (12-3rd), OPS (1.298-4th), RBI (7-tied 4th), batting average (.444-5th), slugging percentage (.815-6th), extra-base hits (4-tied 6th) and on-base percentage (.483-9th). Hazelbaker currently ranks fifth in the league with a team-high 34 stolen bases and he is batting .268 with 59 runs scored in 83 games with the Sea Dogs this season. Jeremy was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2009 draft after hitting .429 with 77 runs scored and 29 stolen bases during his junior season at Ball State University.
Shairon Martis, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Harrisburg Senators, has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 22nd-August 28th. The 24-year old made one appearance for the Senators last week and had a record of 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in seven innings pitched. Martis took the mound for his only start of the week in the first game of a doubleheader at New Hampshire on Friday night and made history, throwing the first no-hitter in the Eastern League this season and just the third no-hitter in franchise history for the Senators. The 6'1", 225 lb. hurler struck out nine batters and the only base runner he allowed came on a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning that was erased on a double play by the next batter. Martis, who is a native of Willemstad, Curacao, led all Eastern League pitchers in batting average against (.000) and WHIP (0.14) last week and tied for seventh in strikeouts (9). Shairon, who currently ranks third in the league in ERA (2.81) and fourth in strikeouts (143) and has a record of 8-5 in 22 starts this season, was acquired by the Washington Nationals in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for Mike Stanton on July 28, 2006. He was originally signed by the Giants as a non-drafted free agent on February 10, 2004.
