d'Arnaud Hits Grand Slam as Fisher Cats Inch Closer to Playoffs

(Trenton, NJ)-Eastern League MVP Travis d'Arnaud hit a grand slam in an eight-run fourth inning and the Fisher Cats rolled to a 10-4 win over Trenton in the opener of a four-game series on Monday night at Waterfront Park in New Jersey.

New Hampshire opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. After two men were out, Kevin Howard reached on an error. Travis d'Arnaud followed with a single before Thunder starter and losing pitcher Craig Heyer (10-8) walked Mike McDade and Moises Sierra, scoring Howard to make it 1-0.

Trenton took advantage of a Fisher Cat error to score a run in the bottom of the second inning. Rob Lyerly doubled, moved to third on a groundout by Zoilo Almonte. Melky Mesa grounded to third and Kevin Howard played to the plate, but Rob Lyerly beat the throw to tie the game at 1-1.

The Fisher Cats (72-63) sent 13 men to the plate in the top of the fourth inning. Jonathan Diaz broke the tie with an RBI single, Callix Crabbe added an RBI single and d'Arnaud hit the grand slam to make it 7-1. Yan Gomes added an RBI double for a 9-1 lead.

Mesa knocked in his second run of the game for Trenton (64-69) with a single in the fourth inning. He also doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring on a Fisher Cats error to make the score 9-3.

d'Arnaud (3-for-6, HR, 5 RBI) added an RBI single in the seventh and Trenton's Jose Pirela homered in the ninth inning for the game's final runs.

Nestor Molina worked three innings as New Hampshire's starter, leaving the game as works on a limited pitch count. He allowed three hits and one run (unearned). He walked one and struck out five.

Rey Gonzalez (8-2) worked three innings in relief to pick up the win and Wes Etheridge earned his first save with three strong innings in relief.

The Fisher Cats play again in Trenton on Tuesday at 7:05pm. Radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins with the OCE North America Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network. RHP Graham Stoneburner (1-4, 3.80) starts for Trenton against RHP Drew Hutchison (1-0, 0.00) for New Hampshire.
